Since Big Daddy and I are still chipping away at the Antique Booth Reno (read Part 1Part 2 & Part 3) I wanted to share with you guys all the other things I’ve been working on.

Exhibit A: The French Vanity

I’ve discovered a new to me chalk paint that is inexpensive (and not DIY…read my Chalk Paint Fail here) and sands to a crazy smooth finish that I looooovvveee. Ok, if you’ve wanted to try chalk paint and didn’t want to DIY it then I suggest trying Classic Home Chalk Paint sold at Walmart for under $8! If you’ve priced other chalk paints like Annie Sloan (which I like using) you know that a can costs in the mid $30 range. A great savings for someone who just wants to try it without a lot of financial commitment. I tried to search Walmart’s site for chalk paint and their search comes up with the Folk Art brand and the bottle looks similar but here’s a pic of the one I used called Classic Home.

A 16 fl oz goes a long way. I painted 2 coats of Parisian Grey on a side table and dresser and I have 1/3 left! I’ll show you guys that in my next post. For the vanity I used a beautiful buttery color called Sheepskin (not pictured) in 3 coats and then lightly distressed the raised areas and the legs. (I use a 180 grit sanding block) I also discovered a new stain finish that I’m in love with. It’s called General Finishes in Java. This is a gel stain and it just makes the wood look so rich. It’s really easy to use and because it’s a thicker consistency then your typical stain, I find that I can manage the issues of drips much more easily.

So what chalk paint is your favorite? I’m excited to use the other colors from the Classic Home line as well as there waxes. Anyone else use this brand? What do you think?

I’m going to try that. What do you wax it with to set the finish?

I tried it and it worked fine for me. I’ve not used any kind of chalk paint before, so I have nohing to compare to. One project used blue Nautical and Dirondck White; the other one is using a turuoise color Cascade. I also used their clear wax. I was very happy with the results.
